Short circuits are not to be taken lightly, as it could ignite flames that end up burning down the entire building. Many people still do not have enough knowledge about how serious a short circuit could be, as they have become over-reliant on the automatic safety cut-out feature that comes with many electrical control boxes. This lack of knowledge has caused many houses and buildings to burn down to the ground.
“Most of the time, the problem stems from over-usage of electricity in the house, which usually doesn’t exceed 25% of the baseline usage. The breaker doesn’t get activated, but the electrical wires are heated. If these wires remain heated for four to five hours, it could generate sparks that grow into a flame,” said Dr. Kritichon.
The safety cut-out feature actually works when the short circuited current exceeds 25% of normal usage and only when this abnormality is an immediate event. Any excess that is less than 25%, say from 5 to 20% of normal usage, the cutout feature will not work.
In order to solve this problem, Assist. Prof. Dr. Kritchon Poomkittipitch, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering’s academic and research department, Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, invented an electrical control box that could prevent the damage.
He said that when the excess is less than 25%, homeowners have no way of knowing that there is a problem. This is also due to the fact electrical wiring is hidden in the structure of the house, which also puts the risk out of sight.
