New generation of fashion designers showed off their talents in the Honda LPGA Thai Fashion Design contest 2015 (26 February – 1 March 2015), with the theme “Smart & Elegant Look”. A total of 232 pieces were entered, with 10 most outstanding pieces making it to the final round and awarded 40,000 baht each for final production. The contest took place at Siam Country Club, Pattaya, in Chonburi Privince.
The three judges, Ekkamon Uttakamol, Jinnarat Chantaraprateep, and Saksit Pisansupong, gave recommendations and suggestions for final adjustments and production. The contestants convened again in the final round, which took place during the charity night, in front of world-class professional golfers.
“This contest aimed to create opportunities for new generation Thais to express their ideas, creativity, and talent,” said Jinnarat. “Each contestant already possessed a strong foundation in fashion design.”
Thiraroj Meepae, second-year fashion design student from Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, creator of the piece “THAISAKE” said that competing in design contests is a necessary component of fashion design training. It is a way of exercising creativity and also gaining hands-on experience as well as advice from fashion gurus.
“This contest is challenging because it is relatively open-ended. Plus, the final piece will actually be produced into a real product and it has to incorporate the Thai identity into the concept,” he said.
Moreover, this contest is a good opportunity for young designers to gain exposure to an international audience.
