17/08/2012Litter Boxes are an indispensable accessory in every household with domesticated cats. Traditionally, construction sand is used as filler for these litter boxes, but with modern technology, new materials made from citronite have replaced construction sand, as it has special properties that help absorb both odor and humidity, the by-products released into the environment.
The idea behind the filter machine was conceived after a round of discussions with the manufacturers of these litter boxes. According to the manufacturers, dust contamination was a major problem during the packaging process. A team of engineering students from RMUTT then offered a solution, by inventing the dust filter machine to help filtering out dust before the filler is packaged into the litter boxes.
The team of three, comprising Siam Ngam-snga, Narupol Yukong-rahas and Patcharin Worawang, worked under supervision of Dr. Pipat Pramoj. They revealed that the filter machine pumps air into the wired cylindrical chamber filled with the dust-contaminated litter box filler. When turned on, the filler is blown into the air and circulates inside the chamber, while the dust is sucked into a separate bucket at the bottom of the machine. The now clean filler is then collected inside another chamber, thus reducing the amount of time normally put into the filter process.
The machine can separate dust at the rate of 3kg/minute, and filtered dust can be recycled into the manufacturing process. The end product, the cleaned filler, is not completely clean but is relatively dust-free.
Litter boxes commonly found in the market come in two different types: non-clumping conventional litter and clumping litter. Besides these two types, there are also the biodegradable litter and silica gel litter.
