08/11/2013There’s a song in Thai that goes “Oh little frog, why does it rain? Because a little frog croaks. And little frog, why do you croak? Because it is about to rain”. This children’s song is the inspiration behind Peerapol Klaison’s T-shirt design, “happiness of frog”, which was recently awarded the first prize from St. Andrews’ Easytee Contest 3rd Next Top Designer, under the concept “Singing in the Rain”.
“I thought about this funny song that I used to sing as a child. In the song, the frog is singing so happily in the rain. So I decided to use watercolor to express the feeling of joy, which is simple and attractive by itself. The style is for male, with a cool, casual look,” said Peerapol, third-year student majoring in Fashion Design and Textile Art.
He said that the experience from this contest will lead him toward his goal. “I like design work, and it gives me an inspiration to take up an interest in fashion design. What I like about fashion is its subjectivity. One person may think this style is right, but the other person may not think so; it depends on individual preferences. My style leans toward functional and casual, I don’t really pay attention to which brand it is,” he said.
“I also received an inspiration from a reality fashion contest that I participated in and became one of the top 50 finalists. As a finalist, I had an opportunity to witness the winner’s work, which really impressed me. Since then, the winner has become my idol, and I am determined to pursue a career of a designer so that I can design clothing for people to wear,” he said, adding that in the future, he would like to create his own designer label.
“People who dream to become designers but are disappointed by their performances in the contests, don’t be discouraged. Think about failure as a chance to start over; it’s the beginning, not the end,” he said.
