14/10/2010RMUTT with 50 flak jackets
Recently, RMUTT has transferred 50 flak jackets to the ministry of Defense of Thailand for use in national defense in the southern region of Thailand.
Mr. Somprasong Pasathangpratash, a representative of the research team and a teacher from Textile Engineering, the Faculty of Engineering, RMUTT said that the results of the research of these flak jackets came from the diverse ideas of researchers and knowledge. Studying and developing polyester textiles to produce these flak jackets is very important because the appropriate textiles can scatter the force of bullets. However, the problem of the jacket development in Thailand is unavailability of these specific textiles. Therefore, the design and development of new textiles are needed.
From the experiments of the textiles produced follow NIJ, it is found that can obstacle the drill of the bullets sized 3A. From the measurement of bullet dash force with marquisette, knitted fabrics, 3D marquisette and non-weaved fabrics, it is found that the measurement shows the statistics of 2D for the force scatter and 3D for collapse. Moreover, all three type of the fabrics can prevent the drill of the bullets sized 2A, but, 3D marquisette cannot prevent from the drill of the bullets sized 2A. This 3D marquisette can work well on the bullets sized 1 (.38 special LRN)
This study result can be brought to produce 50 flak jackets made from 3A fabric to the Industrial Development Institute. So far, they can submit these flak jackets to Air Force who is taking charge of control the weapon equipment.
