04/04/2024RMUTT Thanyaburi promoting the use of electric motorcycles to reduce carbon emissions on campus. RMUTT Thanyaburi is advancing towards carbon reduction on campus by establishing an electric motorcycle project and a battery swapping charging station.
Mr.Rewat Somsuk, Director of the Building and Grounds Division at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi (RMUTT), stated that RMUTT Thanyaburi announced the driving policy of Carbon Neutrality, aiming for the amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere to equal the amount of carbon absorbed back. By 2035, RMUTT Thanyaburi aims to be one of the universities contributing to solving the global climate crisis. This leads to the Green Campus policy, resulting in numerous environment-related projects at RMUTT Thanyaburi. Among these projects is the signing of a collaboration with Power Nex Co., Ltd., which specializes in smart energy management networks, to implement the electric motorcycle project and the network system for battery swapping charging stations from kiosks.” The project will begin at the end of March this year. It is expected to reduce the use of oil energy, reduce dust particles, and noise pollution, as well as lower costs since electricity is more economical than oil. It also provides convenience for students. ‘The project will offer two types of services: the electric motorcycle project and the battery-swapping charging station network from kiosks. The electric motorcycle project will have two forms: rental and outright purchase of electric motorcycles. Power Nex Co., Ltd. will provide standard, safe, electric motorcycles. The university will encourage students and personnel to voluntarily use electric vehicles. RMUTT Thanyaburi aims to significantly reduce the number of oil-based motorcycles. Currently, a survey shows around 800 motorcycles are parked daily, but there are more than 3,000 trips in and out of the campus each day. The goal is to increase the use of electric motorcycles by 20% each year. To support the push for electric motorcycles, the university is also preparing services, including maintenance centers for repairs and parts replacement. Moreover, there is a battery-swapping charging network from kiosks in two locations; each has 15 battery cells and is situated at the car park of the Office of the President and the 13-storey classroom building at gate 4, which should be sufficient for initial project demand,’ explained the Director of the Building and Grounds Division. RMUTT Thanyaburi has always been aware of environmental issues and pollution, pushing for the reduction of oil-powered vehicles on campus. The university provides 180 electric scooters, popular among students, and installed two EV charging points for electric cars. With the increasing number of electric car users, there are plans to expand from two to five charging points. This expansion is in its data-gathering and detailed study phase and is expected to be completed soon. All these efforts align with various sustainable development goals, including sustainable energy development, making cities and communities sustainable, and taking action against climate change.
