RMUTT Volunteers Create Activities for Kids to Practice Social Skills

RMUTT’s Faculty of Liberal Arts have organized courses to teach second year students from the International Business program at Faculty of Business Administration about social skills. Under the “Volunteer program to improve creativity and develop society,” 47 second year students created activities for kids at Sirisena Kindergarten in Keha klong six community in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani province, to provide students the opportunity to learn develop public consciousness in society.

Asst. Prof. Rungrudee Apiwathnasorn, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts revealed that the university’s main policy is to for students to learn about the community’s way of life and develop their social skills. Moreover, volunteering allows students to obtain hands-on learning experience. Activities in the volunteer program aim to strengthen the mental health of kids at Sirisena Kindergarten, while also encouraging kids to have fun at school. Students involved in the program will be able to gain direct experience by learning how to adapt to, interact with, and build relationships with kids. These integrated skills will help students be able to live in society.

Asst. Prof. Saifon Bucha, advising professor of social skills, said that organizing the project to enhance development of various areas by encouraging kids to express themselves, think more creatively, and do activities with others will affect how well they interact with others and function in society. Furthermore, students will be able to learn the process of working as a team, do activities for the society, and build social skills to be able to interact with others outside the university.

Mrs. Ubon Rangsimanchart, Director of Sirisena Kindergarten said that the school employs a total of four teaches, whom teach pre-kindergarten to kindergarten three kids, many of whom reside in the klong six community. Students will learn how to solve problems, and knowledge learnt by participating in the activities will be useful in students’ daily lives.

Ms. Pantawee (Benz) Chaowai, a student from the Faculty of Business Administration said that she had to analyze data from surveys conducted in klong six community prior to going there. The information was discussed and concluded that volunteering efforts should be organized at Sirisena Kindergarten, which is the first volunteering effort organized for kids. Subsequently, meetings were conducted to plan activities, which were discussed with teachers from Sirisena Kindergarten. A total of five activities, such as the “Let’s play” activity, fun trash activity, fun zoo activity, fun coloring activity, and role play activity were conducted, with the aim to enhance kids’ social skills.

Furthermore, Mr. Reukchasairath (Man) Peungsri, a student from the Faculty of Business Administration said that he after doing activities with kids, he now understands more about kids and how to adapt his way of communicating with them. He learned how to express himself, increase his confidence when speaking with kids, control his emotions, and practice skills for building good human relations, which can be applied in everyday life. If given the opportunity, he would participate in the program and do activities with the kids again.

Social skills are important in order to live in society. Thus, practicing the ability to be able to adapt to others is a critical skill that graduates must possess, and instilling this through various programs such as the “Volunteer program to improve creativity and develop society” held at Sirisena Kindergarten in Keha klong six community in Thanyaburi, Pathum Thani province should be continuously promoted and supported.
